Terahertz imaging

The frequency range of so called terahertz waves is located above the micro- and millimetre waves and beneath the infrared spectrum range. Micro- and millimetre waves are used in radios, mobile phones and automotive radars. Infrared radiation is suited for remote controls or motion detectors.

Applications in the terahertz frequency range are far less common due to high costs of necessary components. Currently cost-intensive photonic sources or GaAs-components should be used for targeted THz applications like security body scanning. This strictly limits the number of marketable applications. Silicon Radars research and development work aims at significant reduction of costs and to open a wide range of possible applications.

A lot of electrically nonconductive materials like paper, plastics and composite materials are transparent for Terahertz radiation (frequency range between 100GHz and 10THz) so they could be screened easily. That's why it is possible to analyse very precisely the structure of composite materials or boundary surfaces.

The supply of a low-cost 0.13 μm SiGe BiCMOS technology and development platform by IHP allows the cost-effective realization of new products for more areas of terahertz applications like medical equipment, genetic screening, material analysis, safety and security technology. Silicon Radar has developed a number of prototypes and benchmark circuits for the frequency range from 24GHz up to 210GHz and beyond, which will be improved and developed to complete systems in accordance to the requirements of our system partners.

Interesting areas of application:

In contrast to ionising radiation e. g. X-rays, THz-radiation doesn't cause any changes in chemical structure of investigated substances. That's why THz-radiantion is medicinally harmless - a big advantage in comparison with other investigation methods.
